Book Reviews
The Alchemy of the Desert: a comprehensive guide to desert flower essences for professional and self-help use - by Cynthia
Athina Kemp Scherer. Published 2003 by Desert Alchemy Editions - ISBN # 0-9659900-2-8
From reading Desert Alchemy, it becomes clear that Cynthia Athina Kemp Scherer was most definitely called to work with the
unique plants and conditions of the Sonorran desert near Tucson, Arizona. The work in Desert Alchemy is detailed, thorough, and insightful, almost letting you know the plants from their own perspectives,
from the inside out. Beginning with a fascinating personal story of how this work originated and illustrating how a calling can work from non-logical realms, Desert Alchemy describes plant profiles with
multidimensional lenses.
Each plant is first described in terms of how it appears, what conditions it can be found in, how it responds to rain, heat,
and other climatic fluctuations, and how it flowers, blooms, produces fruit, and re-seeds. After these more scientific details are outlined, the indications for use as a flower essences are elaborated.
Each profile explains harmonizing qualities, what the plant can help work towards, as well as the patterns of imbalance present indicating potential use of the essence. Specific statements describing
current experience further illustrate when a particular essence might be helpful. An ample cross reference section with an extensive list of indications completes what is an unusual and comprehensive
source to the bounty of desert plants and flowers.
Desert Alchemy offers a complete line of individual flower essences as well as combination blends. For more information on
essences or books, please contact Desert Alchemy at 520-325-1545, info@desert-alchemy.com or www.desert-alchemy.com
Intentional Success: A Workbook for the Holistic Therapist - by B. Shaun Brown, BA, LCMT. Published 2002 by BeWell Publications
Focusing on all aspects of designing, implementing, and maintaining a holistically based healing practice, Intentional
Success not only emphasizes the practical, detailed factors but places special emphasis on a variety of additional issues. Areas such as the therapist's own sense of self, integrity, purpose, and
professionalism are all explored in depth, as a way to under gird the foundation of a successful holistic practice. Shaun Brown outlines specific procedural guidelines for establishing a practice,
getting required education, presenting yourself as a professional with full integrity, and managing a practice once created. She also deals with specific interpersonal issues such as setting boundaries,
dealing with potentially difficult client issues, clarifying roles, managing financial details, and communicating clearly. In addition, she also highlights the importance of a sense of center for the
therapist and ways for a healing practitioner to feel fueled and ready to go as opposed to depleted and running on empty. In summary, Intentional Success offers a well-rounded guide to creating and
supporting a holistic practice founded on principles of service.
